Beatrice G. Sackie Memorial Scholarship Fund

Beatrice G. Sackie with Surprise Hanson

It all started when…

In 2019 Kwatekeh Africa introduced a scholarship program specifically for young women. In the places we work, it’s difficult for families to pay their children’s school fees. Even the $20 or so that the government schools charge per year is out of reach for many. And most students prefer the more expensive private schools.

The first high school graduate from the Kwatekeh Scholarship Program was Beatrice “Godknow” Sackie. Godknow was a serious, hard-working student, committed to graduating from University someday and providing for her mother and nieces and nephews. As Godknow was preparing to sit for the entrance exam at the Phebe College of Health Sciences, she began experiencing some health issues. Four months later, she passed away from cancer. The loss of Godknow to her mother and to the community was immeasurable.

To remember Godknow’s impact on her community and to honor her life and love for learning, the newly established Beatrice G. Sackie Memorial Scholarship Fund will sponsor one nursing student at Cuttington University in Suakoko, Liberia beginning in September 2024. We hope to add two additional students to the program, pending their acceptance to the Phebe College of Health Sciences.

Godknow’s kindness and concern for others perfectly suited her to be a nurse. Kwatekeh hopes to see her dreams lived out in other young women while equipping professionally trained nurses to care for Liberians in need.
