Suakoko Leprosy Center
Founded in the mid 1940’s, the Suakoko Leprosy Rehabilitation Center has provided a place of refuge for people suffering with leprosy for more than 70 years. Historically, patients were provided with housing and medical care, an opportunity to farm the land and raise animals, and a community to belong to. However, during Liberia’s civil wars, many of the lepers died or fled to escape the fighting.
Today, 21 leprosy patients reside at the rehab, with an additional 400 ordinary Liberians living there as well – many of the residents are family of current or former patients. For them, life is difficult. With no running water or electricity; a dismal economy; and no resources to escape the perpetual poverty, they have little hope to improve their fortunes.
Kwatekeh Africa has come alongside the residents of Suakoko to lessen the effects that material poverty has had on their lives and is committed to partnering with them for the foreseeable future.
